Artist Statement 2010

I take a reactionary approach to art. I tend to utilize experiences (both past and present) as a form of visual documentation. The work follows me throughout my life and travels, capturing both literal and emotional responses to various experiences. I use the universality of a figure or object offering the viewer a particular position and a degree of intimacy which results in immediate communication if not necessarily understanding. Taking a cue from globalization, the images give forth a hint of foreign space and culture in the form of mark making with acrylic, watercolor, and found objects. Within this schema, is a dynamic occurrence between the sexes an important role that is subversively interwoven both in individual works and sleeps underneath painted canvases. I want viewers to question the purpose of the paintings, the way in which he or she arrived, and wonder about the agenda and possible specificity that is meant to be taken away. My goal is to create an installation, a moment of intrigue and personal/internal inquiry.

Katy is currently based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
